As many as 40 per cent of British men are choosing a foreign holiday hotspot to propose to their partner, according to a survey.
The US is the most popular destination to pop the question, the poll by www.travelmatch.co.uk found.
More than 70 per cent of women had a feeling that a proposal was imminent, while 27 per cent were absolutely certain they would be asked.
Around 40 per cent of men said the proposal did not go as planned, blaming nerves and an inability to find the right moment.
Top proposal location was a restaurant, followed by a well-known monument or country landmark.
Around nine per cent of men proposed to their partner on the beach. Based on responses from 1,000 adults who had married or got engaged in the last three years, the survey showed that couples who get engaged abroad spend an average of £4,687 on the engagement.
This includes an average of more than £2,000 for an engagement ring and around £1,000 on flights and accommodation.
Men spend an average of 10 weeks planning the perfect engagement holiday while 20 per cent spend up to four months preparing.
Two in three men said popping the question was the most nerve-wracking thing they had done.
Around a third proposed on the first day of the holiday, while most (54 per cent) waited until mid-holiday, with 10 per cent doing it on the last day. After the US, the most popular places to get engaged were France, Italy and Spain.
