Woman who became male wins right to be recognised as a man
A woman who had a sex change operation to become a man has won the right to recognised as a man by the Public Registry.
Judge Joseph Azzopardi also ordered that the man to be registered as such on his birth certificate
He heard that the said person had had masculine inclinations since he was a child and his psychological and physical behaviour was masculine.
To get rid of internal conflicts this person underwent gender reassignment surgery in Serbia.
Owen Bonnici was defence counsel.

I'm sorry but I don't agree by the way these people's situations are tackled...
If you're born a male,... having an operation to remove a part from your body which you don't like ... doesn't mean you are now a female... your DNA is still male... and vice-versa...
Am sorry being extreme with this issue !!
One Life... and we're all stuck with it !!

Dear Mr Mizzi.,
This is not something that you will wake up one morning and say I want bigger boobs or I need to change my nose as it is huge etc. This is an irreversible operation that costs alot of money and that your life is at risk. Usually to undergo these type of operations these people must go to several professors, psychiatrists for several months/years. First of all it is already hard to accept that you are different from others secondly the article says that this woman had masculine inclinations from childhood I am sure the experts did scientificly proof this and It's not just an exterior change as plastic surgery removing part and incresing parts and thats it you are not playing with a jigsaw puzzle. They take hormones so there bone structures will change eventually more to masculine. Who are we to judge these people and tell them to be stuck in there lifes? They are just improving their lifes why should we make it so difficult to understand?Good luck to this man enjoy i really admire his courage!!

First of all he is a human being, second who are we to judge??? He has human rights as everybody else. I applaude thim man for doing what he belives. Maltese people need to change its way of thinking. Everyone is equal, no one is more superior then the other person.
I am Maltese and proud of it. Some Maltese people are cruel to others because they think they are differant from them, shame on you for them!!! Good luck to him and wish this man a happy life that he deserves!!!!

We are EU members .... and on certain points there is no turning back.
I do not agree with EU totally.
But certain side effects have to be understood.

I can imagine the horror this man went through. He even had to go to Serbia for surgery etc, I suppose in Malta we are unable to deal with these issues.
I am pleased to note that common sense prevailed and this man is now recognised as he should be that is a man.

Congratulations and I hope the authorities won't go on a personal crusade against this man to make his life difficult with appeal after appeal.

Please do concern that these persons undergo loads of operations to become a male as he always felt he was or vice versa. He had risked his life to become what he always wanted. He should be recognized as a man if he felt and did all the operations why not??Why can't some people understand that sometimes things might go "wrong" in the DNA and it 's not his or her fault to feel like that? Instead "normal" people should feel lucky not passing through all that misery. May God bless him and all his family. Well done to the court that recognized him as a man excellent decission :D

To all of those who oppose. Hopefully you will have someone in your immediate family with the same anomaly and then maybe you will understand or maybe you would dissown them just to save face.

Anthropology tells who we are and where we came from. If the sceleton of this homosapien is found in 2000 years time they will say that it was a female http://library.thinkquest.org/04oct/00206/pti_forensic_anthropolgy.htm

I'm sure he won't be too worried about what they'll say about his skeleton in 2000 years. The present and immediate future are enough for now.

@ dspiteri
The point that you are making is clearly far fetched, and does not help anybody. It only reveals your prejudice.
Skeletal tissue is like any other tissue in the human body. That is, it too is coded for by genes. It is nobody's business to know --or to suggest-- how skeletal tissue belonging to a person (any person) was coded for by genes in their DNA. It could be male, female, or somewhere in between. Nobody needs to know so long as the person is healthy and happy with what they are. As for anthropologists, they now use mostly DNA for sex determination, rather than bone shape and structure.

let him get on with his life, its hard enough going through all the procedures without all the negativity that all transexuals get.i got my new birth certificate after my op and now i am complete as a woman.good luck to you and all others in our position.

I only wish that I could have the courage to do what you have done Rachel and change the way I am and the way I feel. There are so many people out there that think of us as 'freaks' and 'weirdos' and they just don't understand how we are. I wish the best of luck to you and to the man in this article.

If you are born a man then you die a man. if you are born a woman then you die a woman. When we are born the first thing they do is look at our genital to determine if you are male or female. Changing your genital does not make you a man from a woman or vice versa. Can a man who became a 'woman' have a baby? Give me an answer to that . I will start believing that when you chage your genitals you will become the opposite sex. We were born with a gender and we have to die with it whether we like it or not

what should we call women who were born women and cant have babies?
think of sexuality/gender/whatever as different shades of grey. that's NATURE

@M. Avellino
What you fail to understand is that gender identity is not purely defined by chromosomes. Just because you don't understand this, does not mean it's not true. Please educate yourself and research "gender identity" before making some more uninformed comments.

How can a birth certificate be changed? If she was born a women then it has to be shown as such on the birth certificate. This is incredible.
Ms P M Graham
Mar 28th 2011, 18:56
It's only incredible if you don't understand gender dysphoria. If you did then you would understand the need for the birth certificate, that travels through life with you, to be changed.

Well done to the courts for recognising the need of increasing civil rights in our society for the sake of the minorities who for a lot of years have been suffering from intolerance. Let us work harder to make Malta a better place insofar as civil rights are concerned.

I agree with half the sentence of the Judge in that he is to be recognised as a man, but I do not agree that his birth certifice is to be changed because he was born a man so his BIRTH certificte should be as such
