An official letter was today sent to Italy's Foreign Affairs Minister by Malta's Embassy in Rome, protesting against the false allegations made by Italian presenter Massimo Giletti during a television programme on Rai Uno yesterday.

During the programme, Mr Giletti claimed no immigrants were arriving at Malta because Malta was shooting at migrant boats.

Foreign Ministry sources said a protest in writing was also sent to Rai. Malta's ambassador to Italy Walter Balzan requested an immediate appointment with the Rai director responsible for the programme which broadcast the allegations.

In the meantime, Maltese people are flooding the Facebook pages of Mr Giletti and Rai , complaining about the Mr Giletti's comments. They are also urging the government to take legal action.
