Between January 1 and February 28 this year, the Inland Revenue Department instituted 353 lawsuits, demanding €6,231,370 in tax arrears and €15,556,875 in social security contributions.

The VAT Department also instituted 1,169 lawsuits, 110 of which concerned failure to issue fiscal receipts and 1,059 failure to submit VAT returns.

In the same period 25 cases were referred to the courts on offences related to the eco contribution.

Answering a parliamentary question by Opposition Whip Joe Mizzi, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said the amounts due under VAT regulations could not be quantified because this could only be done when the returns were submitted.

In the case of failure to issue fiscal receipts there was no amount due to the government but a question of court fines if the defendant was found guilty as charge.
