German campaigner brings anti-bullying programme to Malta

By acting out such situations, something that children commonly face at school, the students learn how to behave if they are bullied and also appreciate the negative effect it would have on their peers.
The role-playing is part of a violence-free education programme devised by German Oliver Henneke three years ago.
Mr Henneke is planning to internationalise his programme starting with Malta and will be here between April 3 and 12 when he will be visiting several schools.
A study carried out by the British Council last year showed that 62 per cent of students in Malta considered bullying as a problem. Education Minister Dolores Cristina had said guidance teachers and counsellors had to handle cases of bullying in schools on a daily basis.
“As in Germany – where we founded Gewaltfrei Lernen (violence free learning) – the first step is to get in contact with schools and the administration, potential sponsors and the media... Only together can we deal with the problem of bullying in schools and implement a non-violent learning atmosphere,” Mr Henneke said.
The programme uses movement – such as dance, acting and sports – to help children understand that bullying is a bad thing and how to deal with it. The programme has three main parts implemented in schools by a group of trained people.
Younger primary school children are asked to role-play bullying scenarios to come up with a solution.
Older children are taught, through acting and group dialogue, that if, someone beats them up, retaliation will only lead to the situation escalating. So they are taught how to get out of the situation through self-defence classes.
Finally, students are taught how to work in teams to help them realise they need each other to make things work.
The programme offers training to teachers who can then implement the sessions to students again in future. Parents are addressed through individual sessions and given hints on how to assist their children in overcoming conflicts.
“No doubt, the problem of bullying in schools seems to be worldwide and our way to use movement in a holistic way to tackle the issue seems to be a solution that can easily be adopted all around the world,” Mr Henneke said.

Although it is certain that children emulate the behaviour of adults within their environment, this is certainly not always true that it comes from home.All adults should be wary of their behaviour when children are around. Apart from this the peer group is a highly potential vehicle for bullying. I have seen many adults behaving as bullies and instructing children to remove keys from handbags of adults around them. Such games should be considered as crimes by adults when they go too far.

Firstly, I suspect that bullying at school is something that hails from within the home environment of the pupils concerned but definitely not only just. Secondly, what would one do if for instance whilst playing football at school during mid day break, a bunch of mobbing bullies come along to try take the ball away from you, then drag you to an edge of a small precipice and threaten to throw you over into a pigsty down below ??
Tend to suspect that bullying stems from within someone's insecure environment, be it at home or at school. Even money has its own bullying tendencies within grown ups !! Spoilt pupils coming from rich or specific family environments can exhibit such behaviour too, I have no doubt about it !!

Furthermore, May I wish Herr. Oliver Henneke all the best with his anti-bullying undertaking in Malta here. Bullying is equivalent to mobbing in German work places. This phenomenom is quite well known too. People who have their own and speak thier own mind is problematic in strict feudal environments. Thank God that some people have their own mind, otherwise they would have not moved abroad in the first place, for example !! Furthermore, its also interesting to note that the British Council did some surveys into this in Malta. May this programme prove beneficial for the island nation of Malta.

Apart from Bullying happening on school premises when teachers are not around including in between lessons, break and toilets it also happens mostly on non-school premises where their is no adult supervision. This includes outside school whilst children and also teenagers are waiting for transport and also on the school bus, where i remember every one fighting in order to find a place on the front since on the back there will be the bullies. These situations are very real and i believe there should be police to safe guard the victims.
The below scenario where ''A boy teases one of his classmates and the two start quarreling'' does not even come close to what real bullying is. Real bullying includes physical and mental abuse for example a person is surrounded by a group who make fun of him/her once the victim reacts the group will attack the victim physically, this scenario may seem exaggerated but it is very real.

The very same thing is happening to my little brother. He gets bullied a lot and tries to come to the front of the van to avoid the bullies but usually the kids push him away and the driver doesn't care either since its just his job to drives as fast as the van will go. he often comes home crying and its been worrying a lot but no teacher seems to really care about the situation. Though I do believe that this campaign can bring out some good.
