A workshop on actor training by theatre scholar and practitioner Phillip Zarrilli will be held between Friday and Sunday.

Zarrilli is known for training actors in psychophysical process through Asian martial/meditation arts, and as a director/performer. He runs a private studio, the Tyn-y-parc C.V.N. Kalari/Studio, in Wales, and conducts workshops throughout the world.

As director and actor, Zarrilli’s most recent production with The Llanarth Group is Told by the Wind co-created with playwright Kaite O’Reilly and Jo Shapland.

In 2008 he directed the critically acclaimed world premiere of Kaite O’Reilly’s The Almond and the Seahorse for Sherman Cymru, Cardiff.

His productions of Samuel Beckett’s plays in Los Angeles (2000, 2006, 2008), Austria (2001), and Ireland (2004) have won critical acclaim and awards for ‘best actress’ and ‘courageous production’ in Los Angeles.

In 2004 he also directed Ota Shogo’s The Water Station for TTRP at The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay in Singapore. During 2005/6 he directed Genet’s Die Zofen (The Maids) in Austria. In 2007, he directed Martin Crimp’s Attemps on Her Life with TTRP at The Esplanade Theatre on the Bay.

Zarrilli is also noted for his work with Indian dancers and choreographers.

The workshop, organised by the Theatre Studies Division at the University of Malta will be held at the MITP in Valletta, on Friday (2 to 8 p.m.), Saturday and Sunday (9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.)

Participation for University of Malta students is free. Fees for non-university students are as follows: Participants €50 (for three sessions), observers €5 per session. Those interested are asked to book by sending an e-mail to mario.frendo@um.edu.mt.

There will also be a lecture on April 4 entitled ‘Reconsidering the Question of the Performer’s Consciousness: East and West’.This lecture is free and will be held at CB 106 at the University’s Msida Campus.
