Are there enough social activities?
Aaron Schembri, medicine and surgery, second year.
There are a number of social activities on campus on a monthly basis, organised either by the university or the student associations on campus.
Most of the events are directed towards participation in extracurricular activities on campus while others are outreach and awareness campaigns. I believe there are enough activities on campus as is.
On the other hand, student participation and interest is lacking. This is because many students see university as just a place for acadaemia. Others are just apathetic and do not seek to be involved in activities. Then there are those events which do not appeal to students.
Marie Claire Gatt, BSc biology and chemistry, second year.
Social activities organised on campus are a good opportunity for students to feel they are an active part of the University and for student organisations to increase their outreach. These activities can provide informal and extracurricular learning, which needs a bit of a push since enthusiasm is somewhat lacking.
I think there are enough activities but students are apathetic and do not participate. Most students do not seem interested in exploring different niches and are more comfortable following a routine. It would be good to see Maltese youths venturing into less commercial and more active events so that student organisations, in turn, get the support to produce more innovative social activities.
Jeanelle Vella, B.A. Maltese and communication studies, first year.
I was amazed by the number of student organisations that teamed up to organise events on campus, such as The Human Rights Week and the Organisations’ Week.
Sometimes it may seem like there is a lot of apathy on campus but fortunately a good number of student organisations are trying to stop this by organising social activities for all students.
One of the social activities I’m really looking forward to is the annual KSU Students Fest, which definitely brings students together as a team. This annual activity shows that University is not all about books, assignments and exams but can also be a place where we can share our talents and make new friends.

There are plenty of social activities but our students are a lazy lot. A true university student would create a social activity if he is not happy with what there is. Come on you university students, if you call yourself university students, do take part in universal social activities and not only to learn by heart and to remember information or plagiarise from other people's work. Come on, let us see some activity, including the yearly Rag Week we used to have.
I was President of a University society long ago and we enjoyed, Two a side foorball in the gym, Sunday league, Debating every saturday and travelling all over England to compete, We organised Rag Week for charity, Rowed on the lakes at Exhibition park in Newcastle.
Yes, that is why we call it a University because all students should have universal activities.
Maltese students have turned our University into a School, where they expect to be tutored by others instead of initialising their own activities. In my opinion Maltese students are just exam orientied and a lower mental age than their physical age. Most of them are of the type, "Tell me what to do Sir!"
