A team of wrestlers from Malta again participated in the Mediterranean Cup in Larnaca, an annual event organised by the Cyprus Wrestling Federation.
This international tournament has now become an annual fixture on the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation’s calendar. In all, seven countries took part.
The Maltese team, under the direction of coach Jesmond Giordmaina, was made up of Adam Vella (60kg), David Zammit (66kg), Andrea Saliba (74kg) and Aidan Buhagiar (120kg). Also included in the contingent was Abraham Vassallo. Besides helping Giordmaina in the technical sector, Vassallo took up refereeing this season and is looking to obtaining his international licence.
Although not winning any medals, the Maltese wrestlers succeeded in gathering enough points to place third in the classification for teams. The tournament was won by Greece while home team Cyprus placed second. The teams from Bulgaria, Austria, Germany and Switzerland finished behind Malta in the final standings.
