National conference on local governance

A national seminar on the devolution of power, 16 years after the introduction of local councils in Malta, and on the first anniversary of major reforms intended to improve the management and accountability of local government is being organised by the University’s Department of Public Policy in collaboration with the Local Councils’ Association.

The seminar will be held on April 9 at Birkirkara council.

The event will revolve around the question, ‘Is the devolution of power a reality or a myth?’

The seminar incorporates a memorial lecture in honour of Dr Anton Tabone, founder of the Gozo Civic Council.

Though the event is open to the public, it is mostly relevant to mayors and councillors, and students and researchers who have a keen interest in matters of local governance and European affairs.

The official programme will include the presentation of research papers and a discussion with the participation of a panel of domestic experts.

Politicians, mayors, academics and policy practitioners will have the opportunity to discuss the theme from different perspectives.

Speakers include Chris Said, Godfrey Pirotta, Edward Warrington, Michael Cohen and Malcolm Mifsud.

The Association of Local Councils’ Executive Secretaries will also take part during the seminar.

All proceedings will be in Maltese.
