Anthony Bonanno was recently elected Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).

Prof. Bonanno is a professor of archaeology and is currently Head of the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University.

The AIA is the foremost academic institution in the US and Canada for archaeology.

Each year, the AIA elects outstanding archaeologists outside the US and Canada as Corresponding Members for their special contribution to a branch of archaeology. Prof. Bonanno’s nomination was ratified by the AIA council at its annual meeting last January.

The current list of members includes Prof. Colin Renfrew (Cambridge), Prof. John Boardman (Oxford), Prof. Andrea Carandini (Rome), Dr Zahi Hawass (Cairo), and Prof. Vassos Karageorghis (Nicosia).

This recognition comes in the wake of a similar title conferred upon Prof. Bonanno by the German Archaeological Institute of Berlin during a ceremony commemorating the birthday of classical archaeologist and art historian J.J. Winckelmann, held in Frankfurt last December.

The German Archaeological Institute is currently involved in the Maltese Temples Landscape Project, a research project conducted in collaboration with Bournemouth University and the Maltese Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, Heritage Malta and the University of Malta.
