A man was left hanging from a cliff and needed to be rescued by an AFM helicopter rescue team today after he lost control of his paraglider.

The incident happened at about 4.30 p.m.

The man was paragliding over Dingli Cliffs when he lost control and part of his equipment got stuck at the edge of a cliff and he crashed into the cliff face, the police said.

Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department and the AFM were called to lift him, while a medical team was also on the scene.

Two AFM rescuers, Bombardier Ivan Gauci and Gunner Pierre Cassar was lowered from the helicopter and winched the injured man to the hovering aircraft. The AFM gave the name of the injured man as David Cassar.

He is receiving hospital treatment.
