Updated: A boat carrying some 300 migrants is being watched by Italian and other Nato units just inside Libyan waters, close to the Maltese search and rescue area, informed sources said. It is drifting towards Lapedusa.

The boat is believed to have left from the Tripoli area and is carrying Eritreans. Its presence was first reported on Thursday afternoon.

A number of Nato naval units are operating off Libya to enforce an arms blockade.

Meanwhile just over 100 migrants from Tunisia are reported to have landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa overnight. The island has received thousands of migrants since the rebellion in Tunisia.
