The government said this evening that it will consider a proposal by Ryanair to increase its Malta operation. However, it will have to ensure that this does not go against the general interests of the country.

During a press conference yesterday, Ryanair deputy CEO Michael Cawley said he hoped Ryanair would establish 17 new routes in Malta the coming years, the process starting next year.

He said the low-cost airline also hoped to base a second aircraft in Malta.

In a joint statement, the Finance Ministry and the Secretariat for Tourism said that the country’s interests included the long-term viability of Air Malta.

“Government is fully aware of the challenges being faced by the national carrier and remains committed to securing its long-term sustainability.”
