An 80-year-old -woman who died after being mugged in Sliema last December had suffered brain haemorrhage, a broken pelvis and a broken foot, a court was told this morning.
Rose Garroni was attacked in Dingli Circus on December 8 and died six days later in hospital.
Court expert Dr Mario Scerri, a pathologist, said he had examined the victim in the intensive care section of Mater Dei Hospital where he found her to be suffering a brain haemorrhage and the two fractures.
She later died as a result of her head injury.
Asked by the defence if her age contributed to the death, Dr Scerri said old age hindered the healing process, but the head injury would have been extensive, even for younger people.
Charlie Brincat, 30, of Cospicua, Richard Attard, 29, of Birkirkara and 21-year-old Bernice Camilleri of Qawra are pleading not guilty to stealing Ms Garroni’s handbag and causing her death as a result of their violent act.
The three are also pleading not guilty to stealing another handbag, an hour and 30 minutes later, from 88-year-old Maria Cassar in Manwel Dimech Street also in Sliema. The prosecution is alleging they committed the second robbery after buying drugs from Cospicua.
