A private contractor has completed the rebuilding of what remains of Notre Dame Gate, which collapsed in September 2009.
The historic Gate - at the top of the hill leading to Police headquarters in Floriana - was demolished by the British forces to facilitate the flow of traffic. The only surviving part of the gate was the structure on the right (near Argotti Gardens). That was the part which suddenly gave way in 2009.
Architect Mark Azzopardi from the Restoration Unit of the Resources Ministry, which is carrying out the project, said the original stones could not be reused, but that section of the gate was rebuilt using photographs.
