Fr Joseph Farrugia has been appointed Safi’s parish priest by Archbishop Paul Cremona.

Ordained in 1969, the Żabbar born priest first served in his hometown as an assistant parish priest before moving to Mqabba as parish priest in 1973. In 1976 he was transferred to Kalkara, where he served until 1990.

After that, he spent nine years as Birżebbuġa’s parish priest before being appointed canon archpriest at St Paul’s parish, Rabat. In 2003, he was appointed parish priest of St Gregory, Sliema, a position in which he served for the past eight years.

Along with his parish work, the 68-year-old priest has been the spiritual director of several religious and family groups.

Safi has around 2,200 parishioners gathered in 700 families.
