According to Transport Minister Austin Gatt, 564 car owners settled their overdue road tax last month by paying €319,544 in arrears.

It was revealed earlier this month that 26,217 vehicles were without a valid licence as of December 31, with renewal overdue for years in many cases.

Answering a parliamentary question by Ċensu Galea, Dr Gatt said that in February, Transport Malta started a process where it wrote to car owners whose licence had expired by more than three months.

Through this system, the position of 564 vehicles was regularised last month.

In its letter, Transport Malta is telling owners that if they fail to settle their licence payments they will be liable to an administrative fine of €2 per day.
