564 car owners settled their overdue road tax last month by paying a total of €319,544 in arrears, Transport Minister Austin Gatt said today.

It was revealed earlier this month that 26,217 vehicles were without a valid licence as of December 31, with renewal overdue for years in many cases.

Dr Gatt explained that in February, Transport Malta started a process where it wrote to those car owners whose licence had expired by more than three months.

Through this system, the position of 564 vehicles was regularised last month and €319,544 due in arrears were paid.

In its letter, Transport Malta is telling the owners that if they fail to settle their licence payments they will be liable for an administrative fine of €2 per day.
