St Philip Band Club AD1851 recently commemorated the 50th anniversary of national poet Dun Karm Psaila by holding a musico-literary evening in his honour.
At the start of the evening, club members laid a wreath under the monument to Dun Karm in Żebbuġ, and unveiled a new commemorative plaque. Olivia Borg, Joe Cortis and Alessandra Farrugia read a selection of Dun Karm’s poetry and each was accompanied by a Powerpoint presentation which provided context. Members of the St Philip Youth Band, directed by Mro Richard Bugeja, accompanied Joan Mangion, Albertine Abela and Ivan Vella while they sang hymns with lyrics by the national poet and music by Giuseppi Caruana.
Talks were given by poet Oliver Friggieri, philosopher Peter Serracino Inglott, and writer Frans Sammut, as well as club president Godfrey Farrugia on topics such as ‘The Maltese Anthem’, ‘Dun Karm as a humorous poet’ and the ties between the poet and St Philip Band Club. The event was presided by Judge emeritus Philip Sciberras.
