The Times reported that:
"The government has decided that Malta will not be used as a base for the enforcement of a no-fly zone over Libya, the Prime Minister said this afternoon."
With due respect, PM, could I ask why?
I know it's your job to weigh up all the relevant issues and come to a conclusion in the interests of the country, and I sincerely state that I know this is what has led to your Government's decision, but it still grates that I feel somewhat cheapened to be seen as a European of the German rather than the French or British mould at this time.
I also feel uncomfortable to be reminded of the days of abject, craven Mintoffian foreign policy, my discomfort being worsened by the thought that invoking neutrality in the face of international revulsion smacks of appeasement of those who prefer egoism and insularity to acting responsibly as a grown-up member of the family of nations.
The Times also reported that:
"The government said tonight it will 'examine' a request by the Libyan government to monitor the ceasefire in Libya 'within the context of the full implementation of the United Nations resolutions'."
Again with due respect, might I suggest that you personally ensure that it be made ultra-clear, as you made it clear to the thug Gaddafi's lackey when you conceded to speak to him before Friday's press conference, that Malta will only participate in such an exercise if the terms of Resolution 1973 are respected to the full?
And in such a manner that distinguishes us from the other suggested participants?
I really don't want to be associated with the Germans and the other abstainers on this one, and if you would be so kind as to make sure the world can see us again as being four-square with the nations who oppose the thug Gaddafi, it would be appreciated.
