Libyans in Malta, guided by the Libyan Solidarity Movement, demonstrated in Republic Street, Valletta, this morning, walking to the Palace where they presented a letter voicing an appeal to the Maltese government to Parliament.

They are also presenting a copy of the letter to the European Parliament.

In their letter, the Libyans state that it has been reported that Gaddafi’s forces were suffering oil shortages and were sending officials to several countries, including Malta, to bring fuel to the regime in Libya.

“Accepting this deal would translate to the loss of several innocent lives in Libya.

“We ask Malta to stand brave and strong alongside Libyan neighbours, as it has memorably done in the past, and not involve itself in the crimes against humanity that are occurring in Libya as we speak.

“We further appeal to the Maltese government and the European Union to take a clear stance against the massacres that have been and are still being committed by Muammar Gaddafi on defenceless citizens.

“We cannot stress enough the necessity for quick and immediate action.

“The recognition of the people’s transitional government in Libya is one such required action towards ending Muammar Gaddafi’s crimes in Libya,” they said.

Yesterday evening the protesters protested near the Oil Tanking Facilities to keep the Mubariz Ibrahimov from leaving Malta.

Although Oiltanking said this was due to depart empty for the Baltic, the protesters feared this was destined to take a fuel shipment to Libya for use by the Gaddafi regime.

At night, experts were allowed to board the ship to check its cargo.
