The government has denied reports that it was requested by the Libyan government to supervise and implement the ceasefire in Libya.

Earlier today, Reuters news agency reported that the Libyan government has asked Malta and Turkey to supervise and help implement the ceasefire declared this afternoon.

Addressing a news conference this afternoon, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi made no mention of the request but said he had been contacted by the Libyan Prime Minister, who told him that the ceasefire had been declared.

Dr Gonzi said he told the Libyan premier that for the ceasefire to be credible, the Libyan government needed to withdraw all weapons used against the people.

This evening, the government issued a brief statement denying the reports.
