After collecting more than 10,000 kilos of used batteries last year, schoolchildren will again be helping the planet by ensuring the little, toxic energy capsules are disposed of properly.
WasteServ Malta launched the third edition of the National School Battery Collection Campaign as an environmental initiative aimed at raising awareness among schoolchildren on the need to dispose of used batteries properly. All the batteries collected will be exported to be neutralised and recycled.
Students are encouraged to collect used batteries in used paper or plastic bags and deposit them in the designated bin at their school. They will be provided with stickers on which to write their contact details to attach to the bags.
Students participating in the campaign will also take part in a competition with a chance of winning prizes that include a Mac laptop, four iPods touch and 15 iPod shuffles.
The school collecting the largest amount of batteries by weight per person will win €2,500 worth of school equipment. St Patrick’s Salesian School won the cash price last year. One of the school’s students, William Zerafa, managed to collect 13,000 batteries.
