Billions for a tunnel
I just came across a newspaper article on an Italian daily about an underwater tunnel built in China.
Undoubtedly, the infrastructure of the Chinese tunnel would be different to that necessary for the one hypothesised for the Malta-Gozo link. Yet, it’s interesting to note that the length of the tunnel is more or less the distance between our two islands, 5.5 kilometres. I however nearly fell off the chair when I read that the cost of the tunnel in China is a staggering €7.5 billion.
Thank God we have Chris Said here on the Maltese islands; we can get away with it for a meagre €150 million.

Totally agree with you!! This is yet another move to alienate people from the real issues!!! As I said in a letter to the Times myself, Chris Said should be concentrating on what he is paid to concentrate on... local councils.... we are miles behind and in my opinion such councils are alwaus non-existant!!! Tunnel!!! My foot!!!

It is fact that PN are behind in the popularity polls which is not a surprise when we see them spending our money on stupid things like Parliament buildings we don't need, and third world theatres with no roofs etc. The tunnel is just a fishing exercise to try and get the Gozitan people to vote for them in next election.
As for trying to guess what it would cost if they did build a tunnel these are just guesses until a report is carried out. It is just as easy to point out that people in Norway can build a tunnel of similar length for half of what Chris Said predicted.

Perhaps the reasons for this discrepancy is that the Chinese tunnel was built by 1000 Maltese workers and took 50 years to complete, and the one to built between Malta and Gozo will be built by 3 Chinese workers in 3 months.

Joseph Camilleri, you should take anything said by our politicians with more than a pinch of salt. Most of them are daydreamers.

Please forget the Tunnel or for that matter the Bridge for now. Let us concentrate on finishing the Cirkewwa Ferry Project first before we start talking about a tunnel or a bridge. Let's get real. A tunnel or a bridge will run into millions that the Maltese Tax Payer cannot afford, so why even bring it up? Let us make sure that the government keeps his word and finishes the Cirkewwa Project by the year 2013. We might be in luck because if I'm not mistaken that is an election year, unless the priorities lie with City Gate and or the Open Opera House. So it all depends which project musters the most votes. Any predictions?

YOu got it right Mr. Cammilleri. When the idea of a tunnel was proposed a few weeks ago, I also said that the figure will be in over a billion. Recently I was reading about a tunnel projected to be built between New York and New Jersey in the US and the cost is close to $4 billion and the tunnel is not that big and in shallow waters. Whoever invented this idea is trying to detract the people of Gozo and Malta from addressing the real issues. Build the Cirkewwa ferry now. Malta is still acting like a third world country. A terminal, which is a big need does not exist. ON top of everything, most of the roads in Gozo are all with potholes. Has anyone taken a look at Ramla road in the residential section of Nadur where our Hon. Chris Said lives. The street is all potholes and even in third world countries you don't find a street like this. .
