The government will build 202 roads in residential areas between now and mid-2012 at a cost of €7.85 million, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt said this morning.

He said these roads were the government's responsibility since they had never been built or were only partly built to date.

The work will be carried out under a framework agreement between Transport Malta and 29 contractors. The work would be proceeding at a fast pace because there was no need for calls for tender since contracts had been awarded to all the contractors according to their capabilities, the minister said.

The roads will be built in Attard,Balzan, Birkirkara, Birzebbugia, Burmarrad, Dingli, Fgura, Gharghur, Ghaxaq, Gudja, Hamrun, Kalkara, Kirkop, Lija, Luqa, Manikata, Marsa, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, Mellieha, Mgarr, Mosta, Mqabba, Msida, Naxxar, Pieta', Qormi, Qrendi, Rabat, Safi, St Julians, St Paul's Bay, Sta Venera, Siggiewi, Swieqi, Tarxien, Xaghjra, Zabbar, Zebbug, Zejtun and Zurrieq. The actual roads will be announced in Parliament.

“By mid-2012 all 70 per cent built residential roads will have their roadwork completed,” the government said.
