There have been 20 applications for divorce in the first working week since applications started being received at the Maltese courts.

Eleven were submitted on Monday, the first day when applications could be made.

Informed sources said 14 of the applications involve couples who are already legally separated. Five have pending separation cases in court and another couple has not even started separation proceedings.

Couples must have been living separately for four of the last five years in order to be able to apply for divorce.
