Rain disrupts plans to resume Sunday market in Blata l-Bajda

The traditional open-air Sunday market should have returned yesterday after an absence of five weeks but the rain ruined the plans for the hawkers to sell their wares from Blata l-Bajda instead of Valletta because of ongoing works at the new bus terminus. The 230 hawkers are expected to set up their stalls next Sunday despite lack of agreement on the new venue.

Mark Zammit, secretary of the Monti Hawkers’ Association, said the hawkers would be doing so under protest and would continue in their search for a better and appropriate venue for the Sunday market. There had been disagreement over the past weeks over the choice of the new venue.

The hawkers complained about the place and instead proposed setting up along Sarria Street, at Beltissebħ or in St Anne Street, Floriana.

The three options were immediately shot down by the authorities.
