Carmel Callus (Rear Window Tinting Regulations, March 8) is quite correct in his statement about the EU regulations regarding rear window tinting but apparently these do not apply in Malta – having been a garage owner for 30 years I am aware of the EU regulations. My letter was based on fact.
Fact 1: My friend took his car for a VRT and was told it could not be done because of the window tint on the front and back.
Fact 2: He removed the front window tint as he realised that it was illegal by any standard.
Fact 3: He took the car back and was informed that the rear window’s tint had to be removed or he had to get a medical certificate to confirm that it was a medical necessity and get it authorised by Transport Malta
Fact 4: He got a certificate from the doctor and went to Transport Malta who told him that he required a certificate from a consultant not just a doctor – they were too busy to deal with his case that day and suggested he went back in two weeks’ time.
Fact 5: He was so fed up by this time that he removed all the window tint and the car passed its VRT.
This, unfortunately, does not answer my original question: When did the VRT stations get the directive to pass or fail on retrofitted tinted windows?
