Spanish students have been coming in their thousands to Malta to learn English since 2007, when the Spanish government decided to subsidise their English-language studies with generous grants.
The influx of Spanish students has no doubt strengthened Malta’s tourist industry, which is an important pillar of the Maltese economy.
Although it is true that a few students misbehave, and so attract negative publicity, it would not be fair to generalise.
On the other hand, we all know that ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, and there is simply nothing wrong in combining study with holidays, and in socialising and making new friends.
In short, there are enough reasons to support the fact that Spanish students are indeed making a contribution to the Maltese economy, especially to English language schools, but also to the island’s tourism sector as a whole.
