Tiny Brechin earn replay
Minnows Brechin City earned a gutsy 2-2 draw with top-flight club St Johnstone in yesterday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final at Glebe Park.
Brechin, from the Second Division, took the lead through Rory McAllister’s penalty three minutes before half-time after Neil Janczyk had been fouled by Murray Davidson.
St Johnstone substitute Chris Millar equalised within three minutes of the restart with a low shot from the edge of the area before Danny Invincibile headed the Scottish Premier League side into the lead in the 62nd minute.
However, McAllister earned Brechin a well deserved replay with an excellent finish from an acute angle in the 78th minute.
In the day’s earlier quarter-final, Aberdeen needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Rory McArdle to snatch a dramatic 1-1 draw at St Mirren.
St Mirren were within seconds of reaching the semi-finals after Paul McGowan capitalised on a sustained spell of pressure from the hosts by scoring from close range in the 77th minute.
But Aberdeen rode their luck as St Mirren missed several chances to kill off the tie and the visitors took full advantage when substitute McArdle hooked home following Paul Hartley’s free-kick deep into stoppage time at St Mirren Park.
