The inaugural Sixth Form Inter-Schools Debating Competition was held last week at St James’ Cavalier, Valletta.
Organised by DegreePlus and the English Speaking Union, the competition involved four teams from Malta’s top colleges, mentored by University Debate Society members and adjudicated by a panel of judges.
The winning team on the night was from De La Salle College and comprised Yara Griscti, Kenneth Falzon and Cristina Cefai.
St Edward’s College, St Aloysius’ College and St Martin’s College also presented teams. The first debate of the evening (between St Edward’s and St Aloysius) centred on the motion, “This House believes that parents are more responsible for their children’s actions than children are themselves”.
St Aloysius won the first debate and went on to compete against De La Salle, which had beaten St Martin’s in a motion over advertising and fashion.
The two winning teams proposed and opposed a final ‘unseen’ motion, discussing the place of internet regulation in contemporary society.
