Children design magazine cover for the occasion

Children are being given an opportunity to “mark history” by designing a royal wedding magazine cover for publication on the week that Prince William and Kate Middleton marry.

The Radio Times has launched the competition, which will be judged by pop artist Sir Peter Blake, Education Secretary Michael Gove, Children’s Laureate Anthony Browne and Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton.

Sir Peter, best known for his sleeve of the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s album, said he “would probably concentrate on Kate Middleton” if he was designing the historic cover.

He added: “I’d think along the lines that we have someone who’s middle class, not royal or aristocratic, marrying into the Royal Family, and I doubt that has ever happened before in quite the same way.

“I’m not saying I’d make Kate the star at the expense of Prince William, but it gives you an idea that you can follow through,” he said.

“What interests me is the union of two different classes of people. But I’m sure children and young people will come at it from any number of directions,” he added.
