Malta refused to trade Dutch soldiers for Mirages
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning revealed that Malta refused a suggestion made by the Libyan Prime Minister to trade the three Dutch soldiers captured by Gaddafi forces in Sirte with the two Libyan fighter planes currently being held in Malta.
Speaking to timesofmalta.com prior to the start of an extraordinary EU summit in Brussels, Dr Gonzi said that he was very satisfied with the release of the three Dutch soldiers and was informed that they were released at 3 a.m. and handed over to Maltese and Greek diplomats at Tripoli’s airport.
“Malta was instrumental in the release of these soldiers and was involved in delicate negotiations. We are very satisfied that they are returning home safely.”
Dr Gonzi said that although Libya wanted to release these soldiers only on condition that Malta returns the Mirage planes, Dr Gonzi said he refused this suggestion and insisted that the Dutch soldiers had to be released immediately without any conditions.
He said that Malta was informed yesterday evening that three soldiers were being released by the Libyan authorities without any conditions.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte this morning thanked Malta for its help in the release of three helicopter crew members by Libya last night.
Speaking to timesofmalta.com before the start of an extraordinary summit meeting in Brussels this morning Mr Rutte said: “We are very glad that our soldiers have been released. Sixteen million Dutch are looking forward to welcome them back home. I am grateful for the good offices of Malta and Greece that helped secure their release.”
The Dutch Navy helicopter crew were captured by Gaddafi forces near Sirte on February 27.
The two men and a woman were handed to Greek and Maltese officials in Tripoli and flown to Athens on a Greek Air Force C-130 transport aircraft.
They were captured while trying to evacuate two civilians by Lynx navy helicopter with no backup on board. Libya kept the helicopter.

So many difficult decisions for the Prime Minister. Easy to criticise when you're on the other side of the fence. But here in this little island everyone is an expert. In this difficult time we should all be united against dictators and terrorism. Well done Dr Gonzi.

It would seem that the comments so far posted are partisan or national. Either or the article spurred such a flux.....which to me is more of a tease than anything else. Prosit Dr Gonzi, you unleashed it!

It is very distressful that some of the comments here are so absurd, out of subject and aimed to belittle our man presently at the helm of our country. There is no denying that the present situation in Libja is a dangerous and economically sensitive one for Malta. It is understood that on both sides in the local politcal spectrum have for once put politics aside and joined forces to ensure that the correct decisions are taken. This is how it should be where the common good is being threatened. In this situation there is no place for biased and ignorant comments. The PM being the main protagonist for Malta has to take decisions whilst taking cognizance of the opposition's views and also Malta being part of the EU must in the curcumstances adhere to directives coming from that quarter. The framework of this order of things cannot be otherwise. The way the various difficult issues arising so far affecting Malta tackled by our Government with Gonzi at the helm (not Nationalist or Labour) seem to have met the general approval of the locals and outsiders. Decisions have to be taken. From now on Time will be our Judge.

I just cannot understand that the maltese people have to be partisans in any subject!
Always blaming the other party instead of grabbing the problems together! And this country is supposed to be member in the EU! Unbelievable!
Can´t we stay together and show a united backbone in some matters? Or you also want to divide Matla perhaps in North and South, or East and West or Red or Blue?

Some people simply cannot rise above the Little-World-of-Don-Camillo mentality. How sad. Why is it so difficult for some to give praise where it is due, and in this case, our prime minister deserves praise for daring to stand up and be counted when it mattered.

Libya is not negotiating with Malta. If Gaddafi wanted to come and get his jets, he would just come a get them. I'm sure the Libyans are well aware of our military capabilities. It is obvious to everyone that it was the Dutch government which negotiated the release of their soldiers. Malta was only involved because the Libyans wanted their jets back in exchange.

Our grand harbour, has been hosting war ships of all kinds, and from all nations!!! I do not remember exactly the number of such war ships that has enetred our port!! But the number was not low! This morning alone, two of these war ships, enterd the grand harbour,to join another war ship which was berthed in our port!! Those like me living in the harbour area, knows what I am saying. For sure, our government is granting the permission for these visits by these war ships!! Knowing that Libya is only a missile away from Malta,I think that our Government should be more cautious, and be on the alert for what is going on---especially granting permissions for these war ships to enter Malta's grand harbour!!! No one knows exactly, or can predict how the situation in Libya is going to evolve!! If war breaks up,giving shelter to such war ships, may mean that Malta is on one part---which might bring serious conseguences to our nation!! These are not ships carrying workers from Libya----These are only war ships, and it will be interesting for all maltese cityzens to know why,and for what reason these war ships are here for??

@ Mr. Peter Korsten.
I am glad that your compatriots were released through the good offices of my government. I just hope that your government will remain grateful towards Malta and will be more co-operative towards Malta in International fora. As far as I remember, if my memory serves me right, in the past the Dutch government was not that enthusiastic in collaborating with Malta on various issues that were, and still are, of primary concern to Malta. As a I have said, let's hope that your government will remember what the Maltese government has done for these three Dutch soldiers and let's hope that it will remain grateful to Malta.

@ Mr. Wilfred Camilleri.
It's not true that PL supporters are all bitter, illogical and of having blimkers and even asking them to grow up. This is not fair on your part. Not everyone criticising Gonzi is a PL supporter. Come on Mr Camilleri, there are lots of disgruntled Nationalist supporter who criticise Gonzi's government. And way how do you know that Mr. Victor Calleja is a PL supporter? Are you sure that he's a PL supporter and not a disgruntled PN supporter? As far as I know on this issue the PL particulary its leader is not attacking the government on the way it has handled the situation so far. As far as I know even the PM has admitted that upto now he was consulting with the opposition and the opposition leadership had not disagreed on a single issue or on a single decision that the government has been taking so far. Mr Camilleri not all PL supporters are blind, stupid, bitter, uneducated, unsophisticated, uncultured human beings that you make them to be. And your comments hurt decent, educated, cultured PL supporter. Your comments just show your bitterness towards all PL supporters.

VALLETTA, Malta – Malta said Tuesday it was refusing to return two Libyan fighter jets that landed on the island last week after their pilots defected.
The Maltese government refused to let a plane land in Malta last Wednesday because the passengers included two Libyan pilots who had been sent to fly the Mirage jets back to Libya, said Martin Bugelli, head of information for the prime minister's office.
He said the Maltese government was now abiding by a U.N. arms embargo imposed on Moammar Gadhafi and his family on Sunday.
Lawrence gonzi could not give the 2 mirage fighters to the libyan goverment , under no circumstances - that was ordered by the UN . allreday before so lawrence Gonzi could not taken any desicions by himself- thats why he went to brussels urgently.

This is the second difficult decesion Lawrence Gonzi took with regards to these two Libyan fighter jets.
First he refused a request made to him directly by the Libyan Prime Minister to return the Mirages back to Libya. This was at the height of the crisis when hundreds of Maltese were still stranded in Libya. The Libyans could have retaliated and kept the Maltese there - but the Maltese PM, courageoulsy, took the righ decision not to sned back these two war planes ... the Maltese returned home safely.
And now this decision - a very difficult one indeed, but which Gonzi courageoulsy took and saved the lives of three Dutch Marines.
Today I'm proud to be Maltese
