I fought off eating disorder, says Lily
Talks about loss of unborn baby
Singer Lily Allen has admitted that she has fought an eating disorder, getting sick after meals at the peak of her fame.
The 25-year-old also talks about losing her unborn baby last year in a Channel 4 documentary to be broadcast next week.
In the documentary, about the launch of the star’s new career as clothes shop owner with her sister Sarah Owen, she said: “There was a point last summer where I had an eating disorder. I used to vomit after meals.
“It is not something I am proud of. But I tell you what, a lot of people used to come up to me and tell me how great I looked and I was on the cover of every magazine, with them saying ‘Lily is looking amazing. Look how much weight she has lost’.
“I thought I looked good and it was great to try on clothes and walk out of the shop feeling like a million dollars. When you have been a victim of people saying the complete opposite, you want more of it.
“But I wasn’t happy, I really wasn’t. I would like to be the skinniest, mini-est person in the world, but I know I can’t do that without being unhappy. I like my food.”
Ms Allen lost most weight in 2009 during the launch of her second album It’s Not Me, It’s You, when she attributed her new shape to cutting out junk food.
The documentary was filmed before Ms Allen suffered her second miscarriage while six months pregnant last November, but the film crew went back to continue filming her story after the loss of her baby.
She told the programme: “It was a really long battle – and I think that kind of thing changes a person.”
The star, who is said to be planning to marry boyfriend Sam Cooper, ended her recording career despite enjoying huge success. She said of her decision: “People who are famous and successful and live in this mad world tend to die really early, or kill themselves, or die in a drugs overdose. I’d rather not, so I figure I will go and eat.
“My idea of hell would be doing this in 25 years’ time. I don’t want to be like Madonna. Look at her, she’s mental.
“No offence, but that is not what drives me. I want to get married and have kids and make sandwiches cutting the crusts off.”
The star lost another baby in 2008 when she was dating Chemical Brothers star Ed Simons.
Ms Allen, who previously renounced Twitter and Facebook for four months, saying that her use of the social networking sites had become an “addiction”, tweeted later: “Have just Googled myself, am depressed. Going home and switching off broadband.”
She added later: “I just get upset when some people can’t see how nice and brilliant I am. Good day to you all.”
