Boyle gives up sweet treats for Lent
Poor people in developing countries to benefit
Singing sensation Susan Boyle gave up her favourite chocolate and sweet treats for Lent yesterday as she lent her support to a fund-raising campaign.
Fans of the performer turned out in Glasgow where Ms Boyle launched the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund’s (Sciaf) Wee Box, Big Change project.
The campaign asks people to give up a treat for Lent and collect the cash savings in a box to donate to the charity, which helps impoverished people in developing countries. Ms Boyle, who was catapulted to global fame after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent, has enjoyed massive success with her two albums I Dreamed a Dream and The Gift.
Charity spokesman Val Morgan said before the launch: “Susan has known about Sciaf ’s work helping people out of poverty overseas since she was a young girl.
“Her parents always had one of our Wee Boxes at home each Lent. “This year Susan will be supporting the campaign by giving up sweets and chocolate.”
Sciaf chief executive officer Paul Chitnis said: “We are extremely fortunate to have the support of a really wide range of famous Scots, but Susan is our first truly global superstar.
“I’m sure Susan’s involvement will help to raise the profile of the campaign and encourage more people than ever to get their own Wee Box and join us in our campaign to combat global poverty.”
