The lobby group Żminijietna has objected to proposed development near Ta' Pinu church in Gozo.

It said an application (PA/03959/07) had been filed for a full development permit for the building of a retreat house, visitors' centre and ancillary facilitates, coach and car parking areas and the re-planting of indigenous trees on the hill opposite the church.

"It is ironic that the Church Environment Commission is being so insensitive about this development, when on others it had spoken without any reservations. It would be more appropriate if the Church Environment Commission condemns this unsustainable development and exerts more pressure within the Church institutions, to reverse this decision," the NGO said.

"The proposed development site is an open area and outside the development zone. The area is picturesque and of natural beauty and the site is an active agricultural one".

It said the application should be refused outright.
