In the past five years there has been a substantial increase in the number of passenger ships registered under the Maltese flag, Transport Minister Austin Gatt said in Parliament.

He was answering a question by Nationalist MP Ċensu Galea.

Up to the end of 2010 there were 88 registered passenger ships with a gross tonnage of just under two million – an increase of 72 ships, or 550 per cent, in five years.

Forty of the Malta-registered ships operate on European rivers.
