Gulf states say Libyan regime 'illegitimate'
The Arab states in the Gulf stressed this evening that the Libyan regime of Muammar Gaddafi is illegitimate and that contacts should be initiated with the rebels.
"The (GCC) foreign ministers council stresses that the existing Libyan regime is illegitimate and calls for the need to initiate contacts with the interim national council," a statement said following a GCC foreign ministers' meeting in the Saudi capital.
The six-nation alliance urged Arab League foreign ministers, who are due to meet in Cairo on Saturday, "to shoulder their responsibilities in taking necessary measures to stop the bloodshed."
Earlier today France said it recognised the rebels as the only legitimate representatives of the Libyan people.

If the regime under Gaddafi is being declared illegitimate then the Rebels' chaos is thrice unacceptible. These have not said what it is they want changed and how they can work together with the Gaddafi regime .It is clear that neither side can work in unison with the other for the common good of the country. So France, with its own bloody history of revolt has stuck out its neck and made a statement. The UK might join little Sarkozy over sanctions and no fly zone unfortunately They are aiding and abetting a similar regime to Gaddafi's but under another name "The Rebels Party". How is that going to be "democratic"?

Incredible - the pot calling the kettle black. If the Gaddafi regime is illegitimate, then how can with any stretch of immagination, call the rebel leaders legitimate. France has recognised the reblel leaders as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people -- when were they elected by the Libyan people?

so the arab gulf states say the libyan regime is illegitimate. and who are these holier than thou one might ask. is it the saudi arabia, the bahrain, the omam the kuwait, iraq. in all these palces the recent protests have been meet with brutal clampdown including killings of unharmed protestors. who knows what would have happened if the protestors in these countries were armed like rambos as in the case of libya. come on do the media really believe that its consumers are really that naive about world affairs.

This is the funniest news heard for a very long time. But then the gulf states are quite right, that only those countries which have the backing of the powers are legitimate even though they are the ugliest kinds of dictatorships.

Credibility?
The Al-Kalifas of Bahrain and the Royal House of Saud are not models of tolerance themselves.
Perhaps the GCC would regard Gaddafi's regime as more tolerable had it adopted the Saudi model of locking up dissidents without charge for years on end?
