Mr Speaker Michael Frendo has met and written to Malta Security Services Commissioner Judge Frank Camilleri about allegations by Labour MP Evarist Bartolo of tapping by the security services of a telephone conversation between himself and Nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.

In his letter to Judge Camilleri, Dr Frendo attached the transcription of Mr Bartolo’s speech in Parliament. In that speech Mr Bartolo had referred to a letter he himself had sent Judge Camilleri.

The Speaker wrote he would not give a ruling, as requested by Mr Bartolo, until Judge Camilleri came back to him on the matter.

Mr Bartolo had requested the Speaker’s ruling on his allegation that the security services had tapped his own phone and Dr Pullicino Orlando’s, his co-mover of the Private Member’s Bill on the introduction of divorce.

Dr Frendo said the Chair could not carry out an investigation because this was exclusively the reserve of the Commissioner.
