The Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz is introducing a new process that will make it the first hotel worldwide to stop using chlorine to treat tap water.
The hotel said it is using an ecological product, EcoClearProx, which has been integrated into the hotel's water treatment system.
EcoClearProx was developed by a Belgian company, ABT Belgium Ltd. that seeks green solutions in disinfection of spaces, rooms, in process water and in drinking water.
EcoClearProx is a disinfectant based on hydrogen peroxide, recognized and authorized by the EU for use in drinking water.
Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono praised the hotel on its initiative. She remarked that the environment-friendly and health safety features of the new product was in line with the Eco-Gozo vision that amongst its objectives, were an improvement of the drinking water quality in Gozo.
She also stressed the importance of the input by the private enterprise in conjunction with Government’s plan to make Gozo an eco-island.
Chlorine in drinking water (H2O) has some very dangerous effects on health.
Water treatment plants use the chemical to kill of bacteria, as well as algae that can clog up the pipes. Tap water contains chlorine and fluoride but there have been some studies that suggest that the exposure of pesticides, plastic bottles, and chlorine in tap water play a significant role in the high rate of breast cancer for women in the US. Recently, Scandinavian countries totally banned the use of chlorine when treating water.
