Two jewel-encrusted Fabergé eggs created as tributes to Celtic hero Jimmy Johnstone and Manchester United ’s George Best were sold for more than £10,000 each.

Auctioneers estimated the eggs, which have a silver and gold figure of each of the players inside, could have fetched between £15,000 and £20,000 each.

The Jinky egg, one of 19 specially created by the master goldsmiths in 2005 and owned by lifelong Celtic fans David and Pauline McGinty, was sold for a hammer price of £12,000.

The Best egg, which has been put up for auction by an anonymous seller and is one of a series of 68, sold for a hammer price of £11,000 at McTear ’s Auctioneers in Glasgow.

Mr and Ms McGinty decided to sell their egg to help them move to Shetland and start a new life.

Last month, Mr McGinty, who is 45 and lives in Rutherglen, Glasgow, said: “I have supported Celtic since I was a boy and my earliest memories are of watching Jinky playing, so having the egg is just incredible.

“I thought long and hard about selling it but at the end of the day we need the funds to help us with our move to Shetland.”

Mr McGinty said some of the proceeds from the sale of the egg would go towards helping youngsters.
