Removal of cap on nursing course welcomed
The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses this morning welcomed a decision by the University to remove the numerous clausus on nursing and midwifery courses.
The decision to introduce the numerous clausus was taken five years ago and the union recalled how it had long campaigned for this limit to be removed.
The union said the limitation had been the main contributor to the nursing shortage with many eligible young people being refused entry to the nursing and midwifery courses.
The shortage meant the authorities had to engage nurses from Pakistan, Bulgaria and other countries to address the shortage of nurses.

A very well done for MUMN, it has been a long and winding road but finally people have come to their senses and removed this numerous clausus for nursing and midwifery courses. I would like to encourage young students to enter these courses, yes nursing is a difficult job but rest assure that it is much more rewarding. As regard Mr. Scerri I would like him to rest assure that MUMM is always striving to better the quality of its members by organising continuing professional education courses and empowering nurses and midwives to continue caring for patients irrespective of the difficulties being met during their duties.

May I remind Mr Saliba that nursing more than a job it's a vocation. It is encouraging to know that MUMN are organising ongoing courses for nurses to improve the care for patients. It would be even more encouraging if the nurses (not the majority) put into practice what they are taught. I am stating this through my family's recent experience at Mater Dei.

MUMN are quite right in welcoming such a decision, but on the other hand MUMN must also see to how certain nurses are doing their jobs especially at Mater Dei, were some nurses are forgetting the real meaning of nursing care and dedication to the patients. I must once again point out that this does not apply to all nurses but of a few of them who are making a bad name for the nursing people.

Is the next election round the corner, by any chance?
