Removal of cap on nursing course welcomed

The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses this morning welcomed a decision by the University to remove the numerous clausus on nursing and midwifery courses.

The decision to introduce the numerous clausus was taken five years ago and the union recalled how it had long campaigned for this limit to be removed.

The union said the limitation had been the main contributor to the nursing shortage with many eligible young people being refused entry to the nursing and midwifery courses.

The shortage meant the authorities had to engage nurses from Pakistan, Bulgaria and other countries to address the shortage of nurses.

May I remind Mr Saliba that nursing more than a job it's a vocation. It is encouraging to know that MUMN are organising ongoing courses for nurses to improve the care for patients. It would be even more encouraging if the nurses (not the majority) put into practice what they are taught. I am stating this through my family's recent experience at Mater Dei.
