Andre Schurrle scored two goals and set up a third as Mainz beat Hamburg 4-2 to move into the Bundesliga top four and the race for Champions League qualification.

Marcell Jansen opened the scoring for Hamburg only for Schurrle to equalise 11 minutes into the second half. The hosts went ahead again after 59 minutes through Mladen Petric, but Gojko Kacar’s own goal minutes later levelled matters once more.

Schurrle then struck a second time in the 82nd minute to put the visitors in front before Florian Heller made certain of the win two minutes from time.

In yesterday’s other game, Werder Bremen ended a six-game losing run by beating Freiburg 3-1 to earn a crucial three points in their fight against relegation.

The win lifts Bremen to 14th place with 28 points – three points above the relegation zone – and means Freiburg have collected just one victory in their last five games.
