Deserved victory for Liverpool over United

Liverpool 3 Manchester United 1

Dirk Kuyt scored a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield.

On the day when £35million record signing Andy Carroll finally made his long-awaited debut after injury, it was the Dutchman who provided the necessary firepower against their arch-rivals.

Kuyt struck twice in five minutes before the interval before adding his third midway through the second half, before Javier Hernandez headed a late consolation in a typically fiery but entertaining encounter.

Luis Suarez was impressive for the Reds and the Uruguay international had one early effort prodded at Edwin van der Sar but that was merely a precursor to a piece of brilliance to set up the opener.

When he collected the ball on the left of the penalty area his route to goal was blocked by a number of opponents but his quick feet saw him weave past Rafael, Michael Carrick and Wes Brown on his way to the byline.

From there he squared the ball through Edwin Van der Sar's legs to present Kuyt with a tap-in from just inches.

Dimitar Berbatov volleyed Wayne Rooney's knockdown against the outside of Jose Reina's right-hand post. but soon after Liverpool doubled their advantage.

Nani inexplicably headed the Uruguayan's cross back into his own six-yard area where Kuyt gleefully nodded in.

Van der Sar was at fault in the 65th minute when he spilled Suarez's free-kick and his compatriot Kuyt knocked in the rebound.

Hernandez scored a late headed consolation from Giggs' cross in added time but it hardly raised a cheer among the visiting fans.

In exactly the same way i expressed my gratitude to Birmingham City (who?) for crushing your Quadruple Dream. And tomorrow, insallah, I will thank Barcelona for crushing your Treble aspirations. And come this weekend.....your Double goes with the wind .... to be followed by the loss of the Premiership soon after...... and another barren season for the perennial also runs.

with all due respect, please do not give liverpool fans around the world a bad name with your biased comments..it was a bad tackle as was rafael's equally high challenge. whilst rafael's isnt spoken about as no contact was made (luckily), nani was on the receiving end of a terrible challenge, and he was hurt, as many images have since shown..I dont know why football fans have such blinkered and biased views..i loathe man united as a team, and given our rivalry it is expected, but i will never fall to such ridiculous accusations on a player who was injured..

Liverpool outgunned and outclassed United, and I loved it. Why dont we just leave it at that. A great performance marred by an unfortunate incident.

Why are a number of Liverpool supporters (like you) so green with envy at Man United's continued successes that they resort to such banal comments?! Isn't playing European football on Thursdays not enough for you? Or is the points difference of 18 points between Liverpool and United not a strong indication of the difference between both teams? I tend to believe that Man United's loss yesterday saved many frustrated scousers from committing suicide. So there goes your silver lining.

@ japap

You're still a Thursday club and will probably be next year as well. And who's leading the Premiership by the way? And who's 18 points ahead of Liverpool? In a way I enjoyed seeing Liverpool smiling for once - that's all they can look forward to these days.

@ Japap - stop looking up. You're gonna get a stiff neck. By the way, you beat us once and we beat you twice this season. We win.

Carragher's tackle was Red. Just as it was Rafael's. I guess you missed that Mr. Gatt hux?! Guess you even missed Rooney's ingenuity a couple of weeks ago, getting away without even getting a card. May you illuminate us about the other times when Carragher got away with the 'murder'??
Thursday's club Liverpool simply outclassed United yesterday, and if I were you I would be worried Mr. Vella. All I can say is that you better get used to Liverpool smiling cause there is a bright future for the Anfield club. ;)
