Library week, which was this year focused on biodiversity, was recently held at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School. Teacher and librarians organised activities throughout the week.
Book displays on aspects of biodiversity were set up in the reference and lending sections of the library. A number of books on the subject were added to the collection to increase awareness and research options among students and staff.
A written quiz was organised for students to test their library skills and help them become more acquainted with the library. Students with the correct answers won book prizes which were donated by the Schools Library Service.
A petition organised by the Animal Rights Group for shelters, water points, drain facilities and laws to protect working karrozzini horses was signed by students. Banners were also set up in the reference library to raise awareness about animal rights.
Five lectures were held in the library. Talks were presented by Edwin Lanfranco on ‘Wild Flora of the Maltese Islands’; Greg Nowell’s talk included several interactive learning modules and also introduced the documentary Sharkwater; Annalise Falzon focused on ‘Animal Cruelty’ as well as animals in captivity; Sandro Lanfranco gave a presentation on ‘Coastal Habitats of the Maltese Islands’ and John Borg traced ‘Maltese Mammals’ since prehistory.
After each talk, information leaflets provided by Nature Trust, Friends of The Earth, Sharklab and Graffiti were distributed among students and staff.
Two other documentaries were also screened in the lending library: The End of the Line and The Cove.
