Friendly bumblebee...

Kikku, the eco-Gozo mascot, had a ball meeting youngsters on his recent visit to Malta from the sister island. Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said children could pass on their vision for eco-Gozo through Kikku and he would be their voice. The mascot will also be instrumental in raising awareness about this concept. An exhibition on this theme is open at the Auberge d’Italie, Merchants Street, Valletta, until March 31 between 9 a.m. and 12.45 p.m.

The Ministry for Gozo are wasting all the money allocated for eco-Gozo for publicity. The only tangible or concrete thing they have done is to send an excavator into a valley and dredge up an accumulation of rubble - that's public works, but now they are calling 'dredging works' eco-Gozo!
Other than that, they have done nothing tangible on the ground. Just mascots, and posters, and calendars, and outings - and in the meantime the environmental situation in Gozo continues to deteriorate!

Bumble bees are very useful for the pollination of, say, tomato flowers. Tomato plants grow well in a hot weather outside where pollination by wind and bumble bees take place. But in nurseries and glass houses there is no wind nor bumble bees and pollination will rarely take place. So wise farmers put a number of bumble bees in their glass houses to secure pollination and tomato plants will produce abundant fruit. I'm suggesting this for the do-it-yourself farmers.

It would be wiser instead of all this propaganda to stop building Farmhouses with a swimming pool which in most cases results in the distraction of beautiful gardens full of fruit trees. Why build a swimming pool when Ramla Bay is a stone's throw away ! Whom do you think you are fooling . Take a look at what is happening at Xewkija . Gardens in our towns and villages are of the utmost importance since they preserve the very little wild life left especially on the Maltese islands since our climate tends to be so dry, lacks water, and soil is washed away during heavy rain falls. The bumblebee plays her part but other factors are of equal importance if not more. * Preservation Of Habitat * No Habitat No Bumblebee! The idea is great but ,how faithful are we to the truth * OUR OWN ACTIONS * on the environment .
Trees and plants which are being destroyed are , Grapes, Orange, Lemons, Figs, Prickly Pairs,Pomegranate, and Almond Trees, just to mention a few all for a swimming pool ! and what about wild life in rubble walls??? Wake up Gozo
