Jesuits call for action to stop massacre in Libya
The international community must act immediately to stop the massacres and assist the Libyan people in safeguarding their fundamental human rights, the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice said.
In a statement, it said that when Jesus was on his way to Calvary, Simon, a man from modern-day Libya, was ordered by the Roman soldiers to carry His cross.
“Today we are witnessing the Calvary of people in Libya who are paying with their lives to exercise their fundamental human rights.
“While we pray for the victims and their families, we express our solidarity with all those who are doing their utmost to stop the violence in Libya and bring peace and justice to the people.
“May the perpetrators of such violence realise, sooner rather than later, that there cannot be a future built on violence.
“The suffering and courage of our North African neighbours should also prompt us, the Maltese, to respect them more and to shed our racial prejudices,” the centre said.

Trust the local Jesuits - JRS they call themselves - to ruin their beautiful sermon by referring to ''Maltese racial prejudices''.
How utterly irresponsible of them to declare in their usual contorted manner: “The suffering and courage of our North African neighbours should also prompt us, the Maltese, to respect them more and to shed our racial prejudices,”
How come they are sure we Maltese do not respect our North African neighbours? How come the Jesuits declare we Maltese are racially prejudiced? The way this statement is put makes it look as if the majority of the Maltese are racially prejudiced!
The Jesuits need to attend to their religious ministry and remember that they are judged not by what they preach but by what they actually DO.
As a start they may consider putting their numerous premises at the disposal of the many refugees / asylum seekers who are presently amongst us.
Hopefully JRS will respond to this comment. As if!

Some people really dislike jesuits it seems. All I can say is that they are wonderful people.

This is all hollow talk from the Jesuits unless they open up their vast convents, 'retreat hostels', luxury gymnasiums, schools and other property to these people and lead by example. They should be ashamed to boast thet they "pray for the victims and their families" and "express our solidarity " while receiving generous grants and income tax exemption. Prayer is cheap and in this case is of little comfort to the Libyans fighting to free their country.

R Callus according to you. All of us should do as you wish but miracles can only be done by God.

You are wrong ,anyone who has even little faith as small as the mustard seed can do a miracle, but it seems there are no people with such little faith. In bygone days the church used to solve this kind of matters by sending in the brave crusaders, because even than there were no people of faith.

What right does the Jesuit Centre have to say that we Maltese have 'racial prejudice' against our North African neighbours?

Why, don't you think some of us have?

Because it's true. And because, like Louise Vella, the JRS are entitled to express their opinion.
