Police fired a shot during an attempted robbery in east Belfast, officers have confirmed.

As four men approached a delivery van outside a newsagent’s in Greenway in the Cregagh area at around 10.20 a.m. yesterday, police at the scene intercepted the gang.

One shot was fired by officers during the incident.

Three men fled the scene on foot while one man was arrested.

The area was closed off in the aftermath of the shot being discharged and the police ombudsman has been informed.
