British frigate HMS York has returned to Malta after delivering humanitarian aid to Benghazi.

The 1.5 tons of medical supplies were donated by the Swedish government. The frigate also evacuated 43 people including 11 Britons and others of 12 nationalities.

Abders Nordmark, a spokesman for the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, said doctors had told him at Benghazi that they were turning away people with common problems to treat those who were injured in battle. They had requested more bandages, fluids and anaesthesia.

Cdr Simon Staley, the frigate's captain, said the situation at Benghazi harbour was calm and the people 'seem to have got a sniff of freedom, and they are liking it'.

Picture, by Kenny Schembri, shows the frigate's Lynx helicopter flying low over Birzebbuga before landing at Malta International Airport this afternoon. Pro-Gaddafi forces on Sunday captured a Dutch Navy Lynx which landed near Sirte to pick up two Dutch nationals.
