The fourth British Tourism Week, to take place from March 12 to 20 and consisting of a series of events (including Best of Britain and Ireland 2010) is aimed to demonstrate that tourism is critical to the economy of the UK, a spokesman for VisitBritain said.

British Tourism Week is organised by VisitBritain, with the support of The Tourism Soc-iety, Tourism Alliance, Wales Tourism Alliance, Scottish Tourism Forum, British Hospitality Association, ABTA the Travel Association and Britain’s national and regional tourist boards, as well as Best of Britain & Ireland Events.

Plans for Party on the Pier, a national celebration of Britain’s piers and their heritage were also announced at the briefing by Gyles Brandreth, Patron of the National Piers Society.

Party on the Pier will kick off the fifth annual British Tourism Week on March 12 with simultaneous parties hosted on seaside piers, harbours and jetties around the coast and on inland rivers, canals and lakes.

The fifth Wales Tourism Week, led by the Wales Tourism Alliance will run concurrently.
